Good morning...We have just started with Alpacas. We have 2, one 6year old male and one 2year gilding. It looks like you have sand for a "floor" in your barn. Could you tell me what type of sand it is? Thank you..P.S. We love your site!!

Good morning! Thank you so much for visiting our site. And congratulations on your new alpaca friends. The floor of our barn is stonedust. It does get into their fleeces when they roll but it's not quite as dusty as sand and stonedust packs down better. We had a dumptruck load delivered, about 10 yards. The barn is 20 X 38 with the awning and we spread out the stonedust about 5 inches thick. We had plenty left over to do the walkway and the road up to the entrance gate. As you rake up beans you will also pick up stonedust, so every year or so you'll need to put down a little more, not much. And you can rake in a little bit of lime (lime dust, not pellets) to help with any 'odors.'
Best of luck! Take care.
